THAT SCALES

UnternehmerTUM MakerSpace GmbH is part of the innovation ecosystem UnternehmerTUM gGmbH and consists of two publicly accessible high-tech workshops totaling 3 000 m². We appeal to students, student groups, ambitious start-ups, do-it-yourselfers and companies.

Areas such as wood and metal workshops, surface finishing, and textile and electronics are available. 3D printers, laser cutters, and waterjet cutting machines can easily create new shapes and work with various materials. For continuing education, we offer training and consulting services and events for members of all knowledge levels. We also love organizing creative events for corporate clients in the startup environment.

As a subsidiary of UnternehmerTUM gGmbH, MakerSpace offers a unique range of services for the national and international innovation and start-up scene. The workshop strengthens Munich as a high-tech location, intensifying the local network of cities, universities, start-ups, companies and the local creative scene.

Success Stories

Brainlab

Employees of Brainlab from Munich have had access to MakerSpace for three years. With Brainlab’s hardware and software, doctors can find the best puncture site and optimally prepare for difficult operations.

Brainlab’s employees have developed surgical software for mixed reality glasses. Mixed reality combines the natural environment with artificial elements. With the Brainlab innovation, complicated operations can now be planned.

When a doctor looks through the glasses, she sees the patient’s head floating three-dimensionally in the air, for example, and can view the various brain layers inside from all sides – a breakthrough in medical technology.

air up

air up is an innovative drinking system that can flavor water only by adding scent and using retronasal smelling. The founding team wants to use it to reduce the excessive consumption of sugar in the form of beverages, while saving plastic and CO2.

The air up team spent three years developing its idea until, after more than 200 different designs and further developments, the bottle was finally ready for market launch.

The project originally began as part of Lena Jüngst’s and Tim Jäger’s product design studies at the University of Applied Sciences in Schwäbisch Gmünd. Together with their three co-founders Fabian Schlang, Jannis Koppitz and Simon Nüesch, they further developed the air up drinking bottle in the MakerSpace and brought it to market maturity.

„The technically excellent equipment of the MakerSpace and the incredibly helpful and competent team were a great help to us at that time,“ says CO founder Lena Jüngst.

MTU Aero Engines

MTU has been a member of MakerSpace for three years. It provides its employees with access as an incentive so that they can turn private ideas into reality.

Dr. Giovanni A. Brignole is an expert in compressor aerodynamics in development at MTU Aero Engines. „I design and build an effects unit that I connect between the guitar and the amplifier,“ he says, recalling his first electronic tinkering: „In the 1980s, people used to etch circuit boards in etching baths in the basement. Fortunately, there are more elegant solutions today.“ For example, the circuit board milling machine in MakerSpace. Brignole has already simulated the electronic circuits for his effects unit on the computer at home.

Petra Kufner, an expert in advanced design, where the concepts for future MTU engines and components are developed, is an active member of all the workshops. The idea she wants to implement is a stand, oval in plan and cylindrical in shape, for her cats‘ water bowl. At home, on the computer, she has developed a 3D model of the stand. Kufner is an avid do-it-yourselfer, also tinkering with fabrics and paper. But in MakerSpace, she discovers new possibilities: „Here, I have high-tech machines and professional tools at my disposal.“

FAQ

What are the benefits of membership?

With the membership, you have access to the community areas of MakerSpace and our online community. Community areas are for example the kitchens and the MakerGarden. After taking the relevant course, you can access the workshops and use a machine.

When can I start, and how do I pay?

The company membership is charged once at the beginning of the contract and includes one team. For example, a professional team has three members who get a personalized and non-transferable access card to MakerSpace. If the quota of access cards is exhausted, you can add more members to your team at any time for a one-time fee of 250 €. This fee will be billed quarterly. The limit for a team is ten members.

What other services do you offer?

From common practice, we recommend that you use a quarterly invoice to charge for additional services, such as courses, materials, rooms, and storage space. These services enable your team to achieve outstanding work progress quickly. Courses are important, for example, because they are a prerequisite for being able to operate the machines safely and independently (more: https://maker-space.de/kurse/).

The course costs for a participant place range from 65 € to 320 €.

Are courses included in the corporate membership?

No, you need the corresponding course for the respective machine to reserve a machine. Courses are not included in the membership and can be booked by you according to your needs and our availability.

At what times can I access the workshops?

Access is restricted to named team members within our opening hours. In Garching from Tuesday to Saturday between 8 am to 8 pm. Munich Urban Colab is open from Tuesday to Friday between 2 pm to 8 pm and Saturday between 8 am to 8 pm. We reserve the right to use MakerSpace for events during our opening hours. The MakerSpace closes for two weeks each year to take an operational vacation.

Do I get access to both locations?

Yes, with all our memberships you get access to our locations in Garching and Munich Urban Colab.

Which machines can I use and how often?

With a company membership, you have access to all of the workshops. The use of our machines is included in your membership. The total amount of booking time per machine and day is limited. You can find the overview here

How do I cancel a reserved machine?

On the one hand, we want you to be flexible, and on the other hand, we want to find a good balance so that the machines are also available to other members. You can cancel your reservation free of charge up to 2 hours before the start. Plan well in advance or cancel early, then it works.

How can I cancel my contract?

We never want you to leave. But if you want to leave, there are no long notice periods. You can easily cancel your company membership in your account after the first entire month and at any time at the end of the month.
